View Article  What a Week!
There is so much going on in Sag Hampton right now, and I'm not referring to Labor Day weekend fund raisers. Since I devote a lot of space in this blog to the problems we face in our area, I thought I'd stop whining briefly, and comment instead on some recent positive developments.
  1. The John Jermain Library's Development Committee is ...   more »
View Article  OK, So Where Do We Put the "Affordable" Housing?
Someone was quoted recently in a local paper as saying -- and I paraphrase -- "sure we need affordable housing in Sag Harbor, but it wouldn't be appropriate to put it in the new condos that are going up on the waterfront or in the Bulova building." And, this was not the developer speaking. Well, if not there, where?   more »

A few days ago a comment was posted here by an anonymous Saghampton reader, who felt he or she was being forced to leave the area due to the high cost of living here. I was going to reply directly to the comment, but thought the issue could use a bit more exposure, so I'm putting my response here in ...   more »
View Article  A Don't Miss Event: Who Can Afford to Live in Sag Harbor?
Sag Harbor's own CONPOSH (the Coalition of Neighborhoods for the Preservation of Sag Harbor), which frequently puts together excellent programs on important issues, and the Long Island Progressive Coalition, which has been advocating for more affordable housing in the Towns of East Hampton and Southampton for some time now, are jointly hosting a very important event on the affordable housing ...   more »
View Article  My, How I've Changed
Sag Harbor is divided between the towns of East Hampton and Southampton by Division Street. True fact. When we first moved here we lived on Grand Street just one house east of Division, putting us in the Town of East Hampton. We lived there for nearly ten years. Then we moved to our current home, which backs onto Town Line ...   more »
View Article  Yay! We Have a Logo
Thanks to Corinne Cohen we have now have an official Sag Hampton logo gracing the top of the blog. Corinne used an image of a Bowhead whale -- which was one of the types of whales hunted by Sag Harbor's historic whaling fleet -- over a stately column of trees to reflect the two main cross-pollinating facets of this blog, Sag Harbor and the Hamptons. A version of this image is also available to anyone who would like to use it to create a link to this blog. If you're interested, just drop me a line at ecohen49 at hotmail dot com.

Corinne Cohen is a website designer and jewelry maker originally from Sag Harbor, but now living and working in New York City. You can see samples of her web work at http://www.houseofingri.com and http://www.oliadesigns.com (Corinne designed the website but not the jewelry). If you're interested in having Corinne do some design work for your website or blog, you can contact her by sending an e-mail to me at ecohen49 at hotmail dot com. I'll pass on your request to her.
View Article  A Nice Little Film About Sag
Lauren, a former Sag Hampton resident and current art-blogger over at  Sketchlabc brought this charming little film by Amanda Switzer to our attention. My hat's off to Ms. Switzer whose camera work successfully captures  much of the charm of our little village. In the film, commentary is offered by a fishing guide, a gallery owner an artist and by Mariann and Marty Megna of Megna Glass. I would have liked  a bit more local perspective, but that's just being picky. Watch for the Big Blue Ball...it's nice to see it again. Enjoy!

View Article  On Our Relationship with the Sag Harbor Express

SagHampton is pleased to announce that it has entered into an informal relationship with the Sag Harbor Express. The relationship calls for the Express  to, at its editor's discretion, print or refer to posts and/or comments on this blog in the weekly paper. There will also be a link to SagHampton on SagHarborOnline.com, and a reciprocal link here.

The Express has no editorial control over what appears in this blog, other than the right to choose which posts appear in the newspaper. SagHampton, and its creator, Eric C. Cohen, have received no compensation from The Express, nor will we in the future. If that changes, I'll (happily) let you know.

If you discovered SagHampton in the pages of The Express, or on their website, and this is your first visit here, WELCOME!

I'm thinking about these things:

  • Sag Harbor's new mayor
  • Southampton's botched reassessment
  • The condos are coming (and I'm scared)
  • Affordable housing (Why not in the condos?)
  • Church for sale
  • The two-building plan for the John Jermain Library
  • Getting control of the school budget
  • The proposed renovations for the Pierson H.S. auditorium
  • Historic preservation in Sag Harbor
  • Sag Harbor's changing demographics...   more »
