Right now, I'm thinking "theater-lover's", thanks to the glorious reading that was given to Susan Merrell's excellent new play Unused Characters at the Bay Street Theatre today. But, the blank in the sentence that is the title of this post could be completed in so many other ways.

Sag Harbor is an historic town;
Sag Harbor is a sailor's town;
Sag Harbor is an artist's town;
Sag Harbor is a fisherman's town;
Sag Harbor is a antique-collector's town;
Sag Harbor is a walker's town;
Sag Harbor is a literary town;
Sag Harbor is a beach-goer's town;
Sag Harbor is an architect's town;
Sag Harbor is a nature-lover's town;
Sag Harbor is a gourmet's town;
Sag Harbor is a friendly town;
Sag Harbor is a small town....

You get the idea. What an amazing place to live. I am grateful to live, work and have raised a family here.

But, the play's the thing today. I don't write about the arts because so many others bring so much more to the table when they do. That said, I want to deviate slightly from this policy, to congratulate eveyone involved in this production. The play was great, and the cast was grand. Thank you Susie Merrell, Bay Street Theatre, and the wonderful cast and director of todays reading. (I'm sorry I don't remember everyone's name.)

Unfortunately, if you weren't there today, you won't be able to experience this play, at least for now, because the reading was a one-time event. With any luck though, Ms. Merrell's work will someday have a full production at Bay Street or somewhere else. Watch for it...and, watch for the return of Bay Street's staged play reading series next season. With an admission price of only $10.00, this is not only a great bargain, but also a chance to experience some really terrific plays while they are being developed by their authors. I've enjoyed every one of these that I've seen. Highly recommended.

Sag Harbor is a theater-lover's town
and we're the better for it.
