File this under “Development/Crazy.” My jaw is on the floor. Could this be for real? The blog Ozone quotes from the Long Island Traveler-Watchman (part of the Independent chain of newspapers) that a 500 ft. tall ski resort is planned for Riverhead, and that Riverhead’s supervisor Phil Cardinale is already salivating over the prospect. The Traveler-Watchman quotes Cardinale as saying, “I’m pleased we’ve inspired this much interest. I’ll be more excited after I’ve heard all the details,” among other generally positive comments about the proposed 755-acre resort. Is there something wrong with this picture, or is it me? Shouldn’t we expect a little skepticism or at least neutrality from our elected officials in the face of a proposal that is likely have dramatic and possibly adverse consequences for the East End? Granted, Riverhead is a very pro-business town, and maybe appropriately so, but there have to be limits. Read the story on Ozone (click on the word “reports” in the Ozone story to link to the original article in the Traveler-Watchman) then come back here and leave a comment to let me know what you think.
